Annual Chamber Banquet
The Annual Chamber Banquet was Saturday evening. 100 guests munched on south of the border appetizers, icy cold cervesas with limes and then dined on a buffet of Pork Carnitas, Hailbut Tacos, and Grilled Lime/Cilantro Flank Steak followed by Tres Leches cake. Catering was done by Liv & Heidi’s Kjokken. Laura Fleming from Alaska Seafood Marketing was the informative and wonderful keynote speaker. Lots of door prizes were won by happy ticket holders thoughout the evening. Petersburg Rexall Drug, Inc. was honored as the 2008 Business of the Year. Erica Worhatch received the award for she and her sister, Kate Kowalski while their parents, Max and Maxine Worhatch looked on.

New members:
We welcome our new members to the Chamber family:

  • Magic Man Charters owned and operated by Stan Malcom. Stan has been charter fishing for many years out of Petersburg and is involved with the Petersburg Charter Boat Assoc.

  • Woohoo Productions owned and operated by Mary Ellen Anderson. Mary Ellen will do MAC tutoring/troubleshooting, graphic design and web pages.

  • Majestic Eagle Lodge owned by Stephen & Wendy Yates. The fishing lodge is located at Buoy 37, Green Rocks, Mile Marker 12 and will be open this summer.

  • Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Inc. a long-time heavy-hitter in the fish processing industry in SE Alaska.

  • Summer King Adventures specializing in Water Taxi services, Sightseeing, Five Finger Lighthouse tours and fishing will be operating out of Petersburg this year. Welcome to Peter Wright and his wife Karen Forrest.

  • Fishing boat/small business, the F/V Commander, Alan and Shari Otness owners.

  • Dieter Klose, owner of Rainbow Beach Vacation Rental is our newest B&B rental and open for business this season.

Exciting School News
This past weekend our school has reason to be proud of our kids. The boys basketball team won their 3A regionals and also won (yahoo!!) the very close (2 pt.) crossover game with the 4A champs, powerhouse Juneau-Douglas High. The girls basketball team took 2nd in the 3A regionals, coming into the tourney in 4th place-way to go girls! Both teams will go to State tournament. Our cheerleading squad also took first in 3A regionals and will go to State where they have taken 1st out of all teams statewde for the past several years. We can be proud of our young people and the values they have learned here on the island.


Jazz Band – The PHS Jazz band traveled to Idaho to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and took 2nd in the Small Schools competition! Very cool time had by all...These kids can really get with it and selected their own music for the musical battle.

Blessing of the Fleet
The Blessing of the Fleet is coming up the end of April, date TBA at the Sons of Norway.


viking kidsThe 50th Anniversary of the Little Norway Festival – May 15- 18, 2008
Come to the festival and dance, and sing, and eat great seafood and pastries, visit with friends, march in the parade, carouse with a Viking, pose for a photo with a Valkyrie and enjoy our island life and Norwegian heritage. There will be a fabulous poster available for sale to commemorate the festival’s 50th anniversary. The original was painted by Alaska’s own Barbara Lavallee. Contact the Chamber of Commerce for poster details and sales. The famous Pickled Herring band is going to entertain us once again and many of your favorite events will happen this weekend only! Come for a weekend and remember us for a lifetime.

Alton Brown filming in Petersburg!
Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is bringing Alton Brown from the Food Network to Petersburg to film one of his shows. Alton is a new spokesperson for ASMI and wants to visit Alaska in May and see Wild Alaska seafood up close and personal.


The 27th Annual Memorial Day Salmon Derby – May 23, 24, 25 & 26, 2008
Have a great time fishing for prizes and cash over the Memorial Day Weekend. Family tickets are available along with singles, dailies and of course, the popular 4-day with a huge price break. 1st Prize is $7500, 2nd Prize is $3500 and third is $2500-lots of hidden weight prizes and limited edition Derby hats! How to Redeem Gift Certificates
If a customer brings you a Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, please endorse the original on the back with your business name and bring it or mail it to the Chamber at Box 649. (You keep the carbon copy.) We will mail you a check for the amount of the gift certificate. Just for the record: these gift certificates are good only at Chamber member businesses.

New Website Fee Policy:
The Board of Directors recently formalized the policy for website fees for Chamber members.  You can read the policy on our website here. Please note that the most significant change relates to non-profit members, so please read this policy.
