Blessing of the Fleet
First Sunday in May
The annual blessing and sendoff of Petersburg's fishing fleet, the largest in southeast Alaska, is sponsored by the Son's of Norway Lodge.

Little Norway Festival
Third full weekend in May (May 17-20,2011)
Petersburg’s celebration of Syttende Mai – May 17th, Norwegian Constitution Day. This is our BIG festival with food and arts/craft booths downtown, parade, pageant, seafood feasts, dances, and much more!Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646. More information here.

Salmon Derby
Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-28, 2011)
Starting on Friday, four days of fishing for the renowned King Salmon; over $30,000 in prizes! Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646. 30th Annual Memorial Day Salmon Derby will be May 27-30th, 2011.

Canned Salmon Classic
Tickets on sale July 1st through August 16th
The Classic is a contest to guess the number of cans of salmon canned during the season by Petersburg canneries. First Prize as high as $3,000 cash! Proceeds support college scholarship fund. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

The Summer Triathlon Sprint
June 11, 2011
Triathalon, swim 500 yards, bike 10 miles and run 2.5 miles. Contact Petersburg Parks and Rec at 907-772-3392

Fourth of July Community Celebration
July 2nd - July 4th
Petersburg's old-time Independence Day celebration with concession and craft booths, parade, carnival games, races, street games and contests, logging events, and of course, a wonderful fireworks display at night! Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

Tongass Rainforest Festival
2nd weekend of September
The festival is a non-profit event with the goal of bringing participants closer to the natural world through education, exploration and the arts while learning more about our rainforest and the ocean that surrounds it. Events include lectures, walking tours, workshops, and visiting artists and authors. More information here.

Octoberfest Celebration
Entire month of October
A solid month of special events such as music concerts, readings, arts and crafts classes, gallery walks, a quilt show and silent auction (schedule varies each year). Sponsored by the Petersburg Arts Council, 907-772-4573 or 772-3334.

  • Beat the Odds Race
    1st Sat. of October
    Community run/walk in support of raising funds for cancer care.

  • Humpy 500 Go-cart Race
    2nd Saturday of October

  • Devil’s Thumb Brew Fest the
    4th Friday of October
    Home brewed beer and wine are judged at this event, and also a chili competition. Then you eat and drink the entries. Followed by music to dance to!

  • Octoberfest Artshare
    4th Saturday of October
    Petersburg's largest arts and crafts fair, featuring handmade crafts by artists from Petersburg and around the state! Food booths and entertainment. Sponsored by the Muskeg Maleriers, 907-772-3576.


  • Rain Country Quilters Quilt Show
    4th Saturday of October
    Annual quilt show and silent auction.

  • Clausen Memorial Museum
    The entire month of October
    They feature special showing of local artists.

Festival of Lights
Day after Thanksgiving
Lighting of the community tree by a “special citizen,” music, caroling, parade and benediction to kick off the Christmas season in Petersburg. Merchants remain open late and offer hot spiced cider and cookies to holiday shoppers. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

Neighborhood Christmas Decorating Contest
Mid December
Residents and businesses turn their “yard work” to creative and beautiful seasonal decorating. Twinkling lights chase away the winter grays and the whole community is encouraged to participate. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

Julebukking
Christmas Eve
The streets of downtown Petersburg fill with bundled shoppers as, according to Norwegian tradition, local merchants offer customers food and spirits in appreciation for their business that year.
