Come on Out for a Good Time

Blessing of the Fleet
First Sunday in May. The annual blessing and sendoff of Petersburg's fishing fleet, the largest in southeast Alaska, is sponsored by the Son's of Norway Lodge.

Little Norway Festival
Third full weekend in May. (Dates in 2007: May 17-20.) Petersburg celebrates our Norwegian heritage by honoring Norwegian Independence Day, May 17th. One of our biggest events, the entire community celebrates with food and craft booths downtown, parade, a Scandinavian pageant, costume show and Kaffe Hus, music, and much more! Salmon Derby
Memorial Day Weekend. Four Days of fishing for the renowned King Salmon; over $30,000 in prizes! Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

Canned Salmon Classic
Tickets on sale July 1st through August 20th, 2005. The Classic is a contest to guess the number of cans of salmon canned during the season by Petersburg canneries. First Prize is $2,000 cash! Proceeds support college scholarship fund. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646. 2006 Winners here.

Fourth of July Community Celebration
First week of July. Petersburg's old-time Independence Day celebration with concession and craft booths, parade, carnival games, races, street games and contests, logging events, and of course, a wonderful fireworks display at night! Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

Octoberfest Celebration
October and November. A month of special events like the Kid's Talent Show, music concerts, readings, art and craft classes, gallery walk, and play (schedule varies each year). Sponsored by the Petersburg Arts Council, 907-772-4573 or 772-3334.

Humpy 500 Go-cart Race
October. Along with the announcement of Canned Salmon Classic winners, this event features a kids go-cart race with elaborately decorated entrants. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646. 2006 Winners here.

Octoberfest Artshare
Third Saturday in October (Saturday, October 20th, 2007 at the Community Gym and the High School Commons). Petersburg's largest arts and crafts fair, featuring handmade items by artists and crafters from Petersburg and around the state! Quilt show and auction, food booths, and entertainment. Sponsored by the Muskeg Maleriers, 907-772-3576.

Festival of Lights
Friday after Thanksgiving. Lighting of the community tree, music, and benediction to kick off the Christmas season in Petersburg. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, 907-772-3646.

Julebukking
Christmas Eve. The streets of downtown Petersburg fill with bundled shoppers as, according to Norwegian tradition, local merchants offer customers food and spirits in appreciation for their business that year.
