Discover Petersburg

Nestled among the forested islands and mountains of Alaska's stunning Inside Passage, Petersburg sits like a hidden gem on the northern tip of Mitkof Island.

This vibrant island community of 3,100 residents continues to make its living from the sea, thriving in the heart of the Tongass National Forest where the rhythm of daily life still flows with the tides.

An Authentic
Alaska Experience

Petersburg maintains the authentic character of a working fishing village with strong Norwegian heritage, where commercial boats and pleasure craft share our three beautiful harbors.

While smaller cruise ships, private yachts, and pleasure boats visit during summer months, our location off the main cruise ship routes-protected by the scenic, winding Wrangell Narrows-means you can leave the crowds behind and experience the real Alaska. Here, you'll meet hardworking, friendly residents eager to share their knowledge of our abundant marine life and small-town traditions.

Wildlife Paradise
& Glacial Wonders

Step outside and you're in one of Alaska's richest wildlife habitats. Bald eagles perch in downtown trees while over 240 bird species call our 210-square-mile island home.

Healthy populations of wolves, black bears, deer, and moose roam the island's forests. In the harbor, watch for playful sea lions and seals, while humpback whales and areas grace Frederick Sound-our location near the summer feeding grounds of hundreds of humpback whales makes for spectacular viewing opportunities. Just a short boat ride away lies the breathtaking Stikine-LeConte Wilderness Area, where the spectacular Leconte Glacier calves tons of bright blue icebergs into the sea-a sight that never fails to inspire awe.

Art Meets Wilderness

Petersburg's creative spirit and Norwegian influence shine throughout town, from intricate concrete sidewalk designs to traditional Rosemaling adorning storefronts and homes.

Murals, totems, and sculptures created by local artists transform downtown streets into an outdoor gallery, reflecting our rich cultural heritage.
