Little Norway Festival

Petersburg's Signature Celebration

Every May, Petersburg transforms into a celebration of its Norwegian roots during the Little Norway Festival — one of Southeast Alaska's most beloved and distinctive community events. Centered around May 17th, Norwegian Constitution Day (Syttende Mai), the festival spans two to three days with a parade, cultural traditions, and community gatherings that reflect the heritage of the Norwegian fishermen and families who founded this community over a century ago. There is nowhere else in Alaska quite like it.

The heart of the festival is its authenticity. Locals don Bunad — including the distinctive royal blue bunads worn by Petersburg's own young Norwegian dancers — and authentic Norwegian sweaters imported from Norway that are available locally in town. Vikings and Valkyries roam the streets, ready for photos and a little good-natured mayhem. A community parade winds through downtown, vendor booths line the streets, and a food court brings together a variety of foods to keep you fueled across the weekend. Traditional Norwegian foods make an appearance at select events around town — a treat worth seeking out.

During the Little Norway Festival, local Tlingit and Haida clan members bring their own living traditions into the celebration, appearing in authentic native regalia that speaks to the deep Indigenous heritage of Southeast Alaska. Their presence during the festival is a reminder that Petersburg's cultural story is layered — Norwegian and Indigenous traditions coexisting in the same community, each with its own roots and its own pride.

For visitors, the Little Norway Festival offers a rare window into a living cultural tradition — not a recreation, but the real thing, kept alive by a community with deep ties to Norway. Whether you're of Scandinavian heritage or simply curious, the festival is welcoming, family-friendly, and full of surprises spread across the weekend.
